Dr. McDonald is board certified as a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is also a fellowship-trained cataract, corneal and refractive surgeon. He received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed residency training at the University of California, San Francisco.While at UCSF, he received the Hogan-Garcia Award for outstanding research by a resident. The following year, he pursued additional fellowship training at Tufts University's New England Eye Center and at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston.
McDonald went to Dartmouth College where he was a double major in Biology and English Literature and was awarded a U.S. Navy Health Professions Scholarship. After completing medical school, he spent 4 years as a U.S. Navy Flight Surgeon and was selected Head of Aviation Medicine for the 3rd Marine Air Wing at El Toro, CA. Then, after finishing residency and fellowship training in 1999, Dr.McDonald joined the staffs at John Muir Medical Center and the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center.
Dr. McDonald has served as President of the East Bay Ophthalmology Society. He is currently on the Board of Trustees for the California Academy of Ophthalmology.He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.He has given numerous lectures at Ophthalmology conferences and is actively involved in teaching Ophthalmology to medical ressidents.
